Replacement Dryer Shell Sections

Industrial Kiln & Dryer has extensive experience in the complete replacement of existing dryer shells. This is often necessary as a shell becomes thin due to abrasion and corrosion.

To benefit our customers we custom design shells in house in order to provide a replacement shell that will fix the problem, not simply patch it up. When a new shell is fabricated, the sections are full penetration welded and reinforced with 5/8" wrapper bands resulting in a shell thickness that is 1" or greater at critical load bearing points. We also provide a dam ring to prevent material from spilling out of the dryer at the load point. We offer the choice of a new shell only with wrapper bands and dam ring only, the same with new flights installed, and an option for mounting tires.

Replacement Flights.

We build replacement flights from A-36 carbon steel. The feed end section of the shell is fitted with spiral flights to advance material into the drum. The spiral flights are followed by staggered rows of veiling flights to create a dense and even material curtain across the dryer cross section, maximizing heat transfer from the hot drying gases to the material. The veiling flights are followed by combustion flighting to ensure complete combustion of the fuel.

Riding Rings (Tires).

Tires should be replaced when replacing a drum shell. Our tires are solid, rectangular section AISI 4140 rolled forged rings, hardened to 240-280 BHN, machined all over to 250 RMS with corners broken. The tread width and radial height are selected to assure a Hertz factor less than or equal to 50,000 psi.

The tires are mounted on rolled filler bars and are keyed (the tires are locked and do not float around the circumference) but are mounted to allow for differential thermal expansion of the shell within the tire.
